Boosted by new product launches and cost savings, Sony Ericsson has reported a surprise profit for the first three months of 2010, despite a drop in mobile phone sales of 28% from a year ago. Net profit was 21m euros ($28m; 18m), compared to a 293m euros loss a year earlier.
The new Xperia X10 and Vivaz products have helped the company to catch up with competitors who were quicker to launch smartphones. Cost-cutting and improved margins also helped to improve profitability. A net loss of 836m euros was reported by the company for 2009.
In recent years consumers have held off from buying a new mobile phone which along with the global downturn has heavily dented the market.
