Travellers whose holiday plans have been ruined by the volcanic ash that has grounded UK flights since Thursday are facing confusion and mixed messages over travel insurance.
Many travellers will face the cost of hotel rooms and care hire that hasn’t been used, although airlines are offering to rebook or refund flights. It is feared that many cheaper policies will have less cover and will not pay out for losses such as cancelled car hire.
Affected travellers are being advised to thoroughly check their insurance policy terms and conditions and to contact their insurer to find out just what exactly they are covered for. Being in unchartered territory means there is no set of standard terms and conditions which apply.
Passengers with a ticket with a European airline are slightly better off in that the airline does have a duty of care to offer food and hotel rooms to stranded passengers. Most airlines are offering to rebook passengers or offer refunds.
